Diary of a Taxi Driver

A new film i made today, taking the score from the film an setting it to editted clips form my original film i think it works well in telling travis bickles story.

Photographers...

By looking at the photographers in the Tate Modern Exhibition i have picked out my favourite images and the ones that resinate with my project.

Phillip lorca dicorica

Sam Taylor Wood.

Nan Goldin.

Red Light district

Thankyou to Hugo for linking me to this video of the 'Kienholz:The Hoerengracht' a recent installation at The National Gallery looking at the Red light Disrtict in the 1980s.I like the inky pinks and reds of the windows and sordid topic of the piece.

Voyerism,surveillance and the camera

I will visit the new show at the Tate Modern called 'Voyersim.surveillence and the camera'.A show which includes the work of Nan Goldin,Philip Lorca DiCorcia, Walker Evans and Robert Frank. All of which could help push my ideas forward.

Car Shots

This was the short clip that inspired me to go out and make my own film repsonse.I love the slow jurking speed of the car,the voyeristic way the camera observes the crowds, the luminous neon colours that are reflected on the car and in the rain, pinks, emerald greens, the way the music compliments the visual image and Robert Deniros montone narrative, all of which creates a powerful account of a lone man wandering the poverty struckn and sex fuel streets of New York.

My Response

So since watching Taxi Driver and painting images and stills from the film i have decided the next approach i should make is film.I have always been interested in film and find the moving image a emotional experience.

The other night i went out in my friends car with a small digital camera and took footage of our journey from different perspectives from inside the car.I found a way to make the film out of focus which gives the film more of a dream like quality.I leant outside the window taking footage of streets, people in central London walking, shots of bars and nightlife and roads of traffic from the drivers perspective. From observing Scorsese's direction,I used shots in the mirrors, shots from the back window and near the front of the car. When reading up about the process of making Tax Diver,i read that Scorsese had a team of camera men filming these shots, attaching cameras to the car at different angles. This meant he could achieve the best shots possible of reflections, street walkers, and roads.

After gathering all my 100 + short and long videos i began the editing process.Which i had never done before, the process was very time consuming because of narrowing down all the footage. So in retrospect i wouldn't take as much film next time and i would be able to edit quicker with my gained experience.

In my vision of the film i pictured slow motion footage complimenting a song i have been inspired by LCD Sound systems 'New York I love you,but your bringing me down'.This meant i then had to set the footage to the beat and changes in the song. For example the last half of thr song speeds up and has a manic fast paced beat about it,therefore i mirrored this and sped up the film to create a manic feeling.I felt the videos worked well with the music and really expressed a sense of loneliness and fear.

After showing my film to my tutors, they advised me to make the film much shorter and to cut the music. This would mean that the audience could really read into the film what they wanted and get something individual from watching it.Both my tutors felt the the out of focus footage of traffic, people and subways worked bes because it was repetitive and almost hypnotic.

Here is the video with the music i will upload the final version very soon!
